“Tell me again why you listened to my brother.” Sated desire laced Stephanie’s voice as she tickled a pattern over his shoulder with her index finger.

“Because I was stupid.” His fingers threaded into her hair in a possessive claim. Her body melded into his like a perfect fit. Why the hell had he obeyed Nik’s request not to date his sister? It’s not like that had been an actual order he had to follow. And sometimes orders sucked or were just plain wrong. Following them blindly didn’t make you a good soldier.

If he’d followed his gut then, he and Stephanie might have dated. Who knows, even married. At least they were finally getting a chance. They had a lot of lost time to make up for.

“I’d never use the word ‘stupid’ to describe you.”

His ego swelled at her continued confidence in him. He pulled her closer and kissed the top of her head. “Guess being in JROTC taught me to follow orders.” Especially if he wanted to become a leader.

“You were in JROTC. My brother wasn’t. You didn’t have to take orders from him.”

“Maybe not. But it was my way of showing respect to my best friend.” He learned that lesson in high school when Peter, the Army JROTC battalion commander, had talked back to their math teacher again—disobeying the captain’s orders to keep his big mouth shut. The captain didn’t issue a second warning. He’d made Daniel Harter the new commander. No matter what Peter did after that, he’d never earned back the captain’s respect. “If I had it to do over again, I’d totally disobey Nik’s order.” Ray positioned himself over Stephanie.

She grinned up at him. “Good. Because skilled leaders issue orders.”

“I like the idea of giving orders. I can’t guarantee they’ll be good. They might be kind of naughty.”

“Mmm,” she murmured. “Really? Then I hope you’re still good at taking them, because I might have to issue some, too.”

Those might be a very different kind of orders than he was used to—but also ones he wouldn’t mind taking.
